2016 is the year of the curl. Texture is getting bigger and bolder and if you were lucky enough to be born with naturally curly hair, then now is the time to embrace it (just check out Mica Arganaraz in the latest H&M campaign, pictured below).
While this trend might be all about enhancing your natural texture, there’s still a little work to be put in. Curly hair tends to be fairly coarse, which means that it can lose moisture more easily and dry out at the ends. To combat this, look for care products that are moisturising or frizz-taming; while some natural flyaways are inevitable, a full head of frizz isn’t high on most people’s wish lists.
When it comes to styling your curls, I always advise clients to avoid too much ‘fuss.’ The more you handle the hair, the more chance you stand of roughing up the cuticle and causing frizz. Use a towel to pat – rather than rub – hair to absorb excess moisture, then apply your choice of styling product generously to the mid-lengths and ends of the hair. Right now, I love L’Oreal Professionnel Dual Stylers Bouncy & Tender (picture below), which creates that soft, touchable finish you are aiming for – not a hint of 1980s ‘crunch!’
Use a diffuser attachment to disperse the airflow from your hairdryer and help lift and shape the curls rather than flatten them. Avoid brushes and combs and instead, use your fingers to coax hair into place, winding sections around your finger for more texture. Finally, use a little more product to add definition where needed. Voila – 2016’s biggest trend – nailed!
